What is an Assembly?

As we prepare for our first Transition Assembly, join us to get under the skin of the purpose, form and role of Peoples’ Assemblies in democratising decision making.

This session is a deep dive into Assemblies with Network Weavers Jo Poulton and Richard Couldrey, and special guest Eva Schonveld from Grassroots to Global.

What are assemblies, and what role can they play in our decision making? Making decisions through assemblies is a varied and emergent practice, but what is common to all of them is a genuine approach to democracy as re-imagining of how we are together. We’ll hear about some ways of doing Assemblies, play with core practises and look towards what approach the Transition Assembly might take.

About our speakers

Eva Schonveld is a climate activist, process designer and facilitator, supporting communities and other groups to use power-with processes and shared decision-making. She works as part of Grassroots to Global exploring the potential for power-with, citizen-led assemblies to re-invent politics so that instead of bringing out the worst of our human nature, it brings out the best.

Jo Poulton is leading on the Transition Assembly for the Network Weaving team, and works with groups and networks across Wales and the Welsh Border Counties. She has also been involved in grassroots campaigning for Waste Not Bristol and Basic Income for Farmers, and is a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion.

Richard Couldrey leads on supporting the Transition Together network to develop and grow, as well as being part of Transition Town Tooting and the Transition London Hub. He’s passionate about facilitating space to bring people together and build community power.
